Istanbul is Smoking

Jessica and I went to Istanbul this weekend while my parents stayed with the kids in Basel. While buying some pumpkin seeds at a convenience store near our hotel and the Blue Mosque, I noticed really interesting photos on the cigarette packs behind the counter. Looking closer, I realized the photos were of sick, dead, or dying people. For curiosity sake, these graphics were much more interesting and eye-catching than Joe Camel or your basic two-color branded pack with the perfunctory warning label.

I asked the store keeper about them, and he just shrugged and said the photos didn’t stop people from buying the cigarettes.

The sighting was particularly timely as this week a judge in the US blocked a rule requiring cigarette packs sold in the US to carry similar photos.
